VIETHOPE STUDENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2024

In order to support and nurture the dreams of first-year students by providing them with opportunities for comprehensive learning and development, VietHope officially announces the opening of applications for the VietHope Student Development Program (VSDP). Each scholarship is valued at 1,000 USD, including:

  1. FINANCIAL SUPPORT of 600 USD per scholarship: Students will receive 400 USD in their first year and 200 USD in their second year if they meet the criteria for maintaining the VSDP scholarship.

  2. SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS valued at 400 USD per scholarship, including:

    • A 7-day skills summer camp,
    • One-on-one mentoring and support from advisors,
    • A series of workshops and training sessions on career development, etc.

  3. SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION: Open to first-year undergraduate students from the following universities:

    • University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hue University
    • University of Economics, Hue University
    • University of Sciences, Hue University
    • University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City
    • University of Science, VNU-HCM
    • University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCM
    • Can Tho University

    Note: The scholarship is not available to students in the field of Education who are already supported under Government Decree 116/2020/NĐ-CP.

"On August 9, 2024, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City issued Decision No. 1035/QĐ-ĐHQG on the 'Approval of the joint training program in Applied Mathematics at the master's level between the University of Science and four French universities.' The joint program will be active until September 30, 2028. Accordingly, the program will recruit and train students for the cohorts of 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027.

The University of Science will soon announce the 2024 admission process. To facilitate the organization of the admissions, applicants can pre-register through the following form.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science is organizing an orientation session titled 'Specialized Orientation for 2022 Cohort Students', with details as follows:

  1. Purpose:
    • To provide an overview of the Mathematics group programme (including Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Mathematics and Computer Science) for students enrolled in the 2022 cohort.
    • To offer detailed information about the specializations within the Mathematics group for the 2022 cohort, specifically regarding the training program, regulations on seminars/graduation thesis/internships, job opportunities, and to help students make informed decisions when choosing a specialization that matches their abilities and interests. (Note: 2022 cohort students who have already registered for a specialization can make a final change to their major/specialization during the middle of the 1st semester of the 2024-2025 academic year.)
    • To answer any questions from students related to course registration, subject selection, etc.

  1. Time and Venue:

    • Time: Thursday afternoon, August 22, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
    • Venue: The session will be held online via Zoom. The Zoom link will be updated on this announcement before the session and sent via email to registered students. Students are reminded to log in with their names formatted as follows: Student ID_Full Name.

     

  2. Target Audience:

    • All students in the Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Mathematics and Computer Science groups from the 2022 cohort.
    • Students from other cohorts may attend if interested.

  • Title: Safe Screening: An introduction and perspectives
  • Abstract: 
    Convex optimization problems with additive penalty terms arise in numerous applications, including Signal Processing and Machine Learning. A key factor underlying their success is their ability to promote solutions with a desired structure, such as sparsity. This talk will delve into the fundamental concepts behind "safe screening", an acceleration technique for sparsity-promoting optimization problems. Specifically, safe screening involves designing tests to detect zero entries in the solution of the problem. We will then present the latest contributions in this field and discuss future perspectives.
