Các lớp hè ngắn là hoạt động truyền thống nhiều năm qua ở Khoa Toán - Tin học Trường Đại học Khoa học Tự nhiên - Đại học Quốc gia TPHCM.

Short summer courses constitute a traditional activity during the summer breaks (June to August) at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Science - VNUHCM.

Thông tin về các lớp hè các năm gần đây có ở trang Lớp Hè.

Information on recent Summer Courses is available at this page Summer Courses

Studying hyperbolic manifolds, or more generally negatively/non-positively curved manifolds, has been one of the main topics in geometry and geometric topology. It would be too ambitious to study this gigantic knowledge through just a short course. We are just aiming for some geometric flavors through a shortcut from basic setups to some of the beautiful results that are very influential in current research. Tentatively, we may go over following topics:

  1. Hyperbolic spaces and hyperbolic groups: overview about hyperbolic spaces of constant sectional curvature and their geometry. We then also discuss more general rank one symmetric spaces (complex and quaternionic hyperbolic spaces) and Gromov hyperbolic spaces, CAT(-1) spaces. Finally we discuss hyperbolic groups in the sense of Gromov.
  2. Constructing hyperbolic manifolds and geometry of hyperbolic manifolds: Notable examples of hyperbolic manifolds are surfaces of genus at least 2, modular surface, figure 8 knot complement, quotients by arithmetic lattices, Gromov- Piatetski- Shapiro example, etc.
  3. Mostow’s rigidity: one of the most well-known theorems in hyperbolic geometry. We would like to go over some ideas in its proof (by Mostow) as they are still used a lot nowaday. A quick survey of an up to date follows up results will be given.
  4. More about geometry of hyperbolic manifolds. This could be redundant or could be some stories about recent results.
  5. Other rigidity questions: we mention a few rigidity questions and recent results. We probably consider the questions and result that has more dynamics flavor.
